Waist-tied plaid shirts, crop tops, leather and lace? You have to admit; the 90s had a serious style moment. But in its recent resurgence, the 90s trend has taken on a more streamlined and sophisticated modality.
Style genius and blogger, Dylana Suarez (you can call her “Nana” or “Dy”), of Color Me Nana shows us her take on the bold comeback. We met up with Dylana in the West Village, the birthplace of avant-garde culture in New York City, to pay homage to the grunge movement with a couture makeup look that’s just as iconic.
LP: What’s your favorite thing about NYC?
DS: “I love that the city never stops. It’s quite the change from where I grew up in Cali and the small city of Philadelphia where I lived for two years before moving to NYC. Every day I’m sure to meet someone new and interesting, and I’m always able to discover new places by foot. I love this freedom so much.”
Here, Dylana layered a lacy zip-up jacket over a baby doll dress to keep the look flirty and feminine, but still tough. For this look, it’s all about the bold accents. Think studded black bag, chunky arm candy, and sky-high topknot.
To bring the edge, we complemented Dylana’s 90s look with bold, winged-out lashes; a bright pink lip and a funky turquoise nail. To really stretch the gaze out and draw out each lash, we applied mascara on the upper line of the lashes. This spread out effect is made even more spectacular because the lower part of the eye remains nude.
“A bold look means not being afraid to wear what you love or care about what other people think,” Dy reveals, “It takes confidence to embrace the person you are.”
We couldn’t agree more.
