Coils: How to Get Gorgeous, Well-Defined Locks

  • We’ve bid adieu to our flat irons and chemical straighteners and embraced our natural coils. And, we couldn’t feel more gorgeous! If you’re a woman with coily hair, there’s no reason to fight your coils – work with them. There’s nothing sexier than a head full of bouncy, playful ringlets.

“Because of the amount of cuticle layers in tight, coily hair, moisture has a hard time penetrating it,” says Hair Expert Johnny Lavoy. “You really want to get a ton of moisture in there to give your hair ultimate softness and manageability.”

Here, our featured coily-haired gal Camille shares her personal techniques, plus we give you a step-by-step guide to achieving her gorgeous look.

  • Camille’s Twisted Tresses

What do you love about your coils? What’s your biggest challenge?

“The thing that I love about my hair is the same thing that makes it difficult. It’s thick and I love that, but when it comes time to style it takes forever.”

  • Which products work best on your hair?

“My hair is very dry, so products that add a lot of moisture and make it easier to style and manage. Any kind of cream!”

  • What’s your go-to technique for styling your coils?

“I just use a basic shampoo. I don’t always condition, which is probably bad. I blow it out and do a two-strand twist with a basic hair gel or just slick it back in a ponytail if I don’t want to deal with it.”

  • Step 1: Moisture Surge

For short to medium hair, use 8 to 10 pumps of EverCurl Hydracharge Cleansing Conditioner. For thicker or longer hair, use more. Apply to wet hair and massage gently into a low lather. Rinse thoroughly with cold water.

  • Step 2: Detangle

Next, apply a generous amount of conditioner (2 to 3 handfuls or more) starting at your ends and working your way up. While the conditioner is on your hair, detangle strands using fingers or a wide-toothed comb.

  • Step 3: Lock Luster

Apply a leave-in cream to wet hair. Use about 1 to 2 pumps for every 3-inch section. Do not rinse.

  • Step 4: Twist

Squeeze 1 to 2 pumps of Sculpt & Hold Cream Gel into palms and apply to each section of hair from root to tip. Next, lift sections of hair and twist them together two strands at a time. Let your hair dry au natural. Untwist.

  • Et Voila…Perfect Coils

The biggest tip for coily-haired-gals: “Do not scrunch or manipulate your hair. It only creates frizz,” says Hair Expert Johnny Lavoy. “If you don’t have time to let your hair dry naturally, get a diffuser.”
