A Modern Art-Inspired Mani Masterpiece

In recent years, tape has become the at-home nail artist's BFF. Masking tape, painter's tape, nail striping tape etc. are now staples in an amateur manicurist's kit for its ability to create patterns, acting as a stencil. Those who have avoided nail art, due to unsteady hands, now have the ability to create clean lines with ease. Inspired by the geometric work of a certain Dutch painter, this look brings the Neo-Plasticist's style into 2012 by trading his palette of primary colors for fresh, fashion-forward shades.

  • STEP 1

Start by applying one coat of One Stop Base followed by two coats of L'Oréal Paris Colour Riche Nail in I Will, a soft, creamy white. Wait for the polish to dry completely before proceeding.

  • STEP 2

Create geometric patterns using nail striping tape (available at beauty supply stores) or cut thin strips of household tape. Tap the tape gently on your palm to reduce tackiness, ensuring easier removal. Place it on the nail, leaving some extra hanging over. Make the patterns as random or uniform as you like.

  • STEP 3

Using L'Oréal Paris Colour Riche Nail in L'Orange, Members Only and Now You Sea Me, fill in the quadrangles you created. The flat, Colour Riche brush is ideal, as you can turn it sideways to fill in smaller areas. Polish one nail at a time, pulling the tape off with tweezers as you go. Make sure you remove it before the lacquer has a chance to dry. Get creative with your color patterns and leave some spaces white.

  • STEP 4

Now it's time to fill in the signature grid lines. Dip a nail art striping brush into L'Oréal Paris Colour Riche Nail in After Hours and wipe it against the neck of the bottle to leave very little polish on the brush. You want it to be wet but with no beads of lacquer. Gently swipe the brush between the boxes of color in one long motion. Outline all the colors, including the white spaces.

  • STEP 5

Wait until After Hours has time to dry before applying a layer of Top of the Line top coat so that you don't smear the lines. It's very modern day mod, no? Now go out and wait for the oohs and aahs to begin.
